Maplehurst Message for March 9, 2018

Have a wonderful March Break everyone! There is no school next week.

There has been so much happening in the past few weeks here at Maplehurst and everyone has been working hard. Our Junior Arts Crawl last night was phenomenal! The students’ visual arts pieces and performances were so well done. I hope you had a chance to come out and see their amazing work.

Forest of Reading:

Maplehurst is participating in the “Forest of Reading” program this year.  This is Canada’s largest

recreational reading program that encourages the love of reading across all ages.  It also rewards them

for reading by making them the judges in a province-wide event. To be eligible to vote for their

favourite book, a child must read a minimum of five books from one of the lists of the Official Selections:

Blue Spruce: K-2

Silver Birch Express: 3-4

Silver Birch Fiction/Non-Fiction: 5-6

To promote the reading of these books, all students from grades 3 to 6 will be celebrated in

several ways.  Each time a student completes a book they add a leaf to our tree in the library with their

name on it. When a student completes reading 5 books, their name will be mentioned on the

announcements and when they read 10 books, they will be given a prize.  All students will be asked to

complete a short quiz for each book in order to verify that they have read and understood each book

before they will be allowed to cast a vote and claim a prize. All voting will take place during school time.
